A SaaS product is typically built in stages: discovery to define users and the core problem, UX and architecture design, an MVP build, launch with monitoring and analytics, then continuous improvement based on real usage. Decisions made early about multi-tenancy, security and integrations shape how easily the product can grow.
1. Discovery
Clarify who the users are, what problem they pay to solve, and what the first release must do. Identify the integrations, compliance needs and success measures.
2. UX and architecture
Design the key user journeys and prototype them. In parallel, decide the technical architecture: how customer accounts and data are separated (multi-tenancy), authentication and roles, and how the product will connect to other systems.
3. MVP build
Build the smallest version that delivers real value, in short cycles with regular demos. Include analytics so you can learn from usage.
4. Subscriptions, onboarding and admin
- Sign-up and onboarding flows
- Billing and subscription management
- Admin tools for support and account management
- Customer-facing settings and permissions
5. Launch
Test thoroughly, including security, then deploy with monitoring, error tracking and backups in place.
6. Continuous improvement
Use real usage, support requests and customer feedback to prioritise the roadmap. Release small improvements frequently rather than large changes rarely.
Decisions that are hard to change later
- How customer data is separated and secured
- The authentication and permissions model
- Core data structures
- Hosting and deployment approach
